Tesla Acquires German Wireless Charging Firm: Is the Future of EV Charging Wireless?

In a bold move that suggests a potential future expansion into wireless charging, Tesla, the leading electric vehicle manufacturer, has reportedly acquired the German wireless charging tech company Wiferion for an undisclosed sum. A German Tesla news site, cited by Carscoops, has broken the news, hinting at Tesla’s potential entrance into the wireless EV charging space.

However, neither Tesla nor Wiferion has made any public statements about the $76 million acquisition. The information is primarily inferred from the text “Tesla Engineering Germany GmbH,” spotted at the bottom of Wiferion’s website, along with a figure under “Business Combinations” that aligns with the speculated purchase price in Tesla’s latest earnings report.

It is important to note that this does not necessarily imply an immediate rollout of wireless charging at Tesla’s Supercharger stations. Presently, wireless EV charging technology has not surpassed level 2 charging speeds, meaning that it would not provide a superior alternative to Tesla’s current wired Supercharger network. Furthermore, Tesla’s ongoing deployment of its Magic Dock adapters further points to the likelihood that any potential implementation of wireless charging infrastructure may be some way off.

Industry analysts suggest that the acquisition of Wiferion could primarily be a strategic move by Tesla to enhance its domestic charging solutions. During Tesla’s investor’s day presentation earlier this year, the company hinted at this by presenting an image of a Tesla vehicle positioned over a wireless charging pad in a garage. Today, Tesla wall chargers deliver a maximum power output of 11.5 kW at 240 volts, while some wireless EV chargers are capable of reaching up to 20 kW. This indicates that Tesla might be able to leverage Wiferion’s technology to develop a more robust and user-friendly home charging solution.

While the silence from both companies is deafening, the industry awaits an official announcement from Tesla, potentially at its next Investor Day, to learn more about its plans for Wiferion.
