Italy Bans ChatGPT Over Privacy Concerns and Investigates OpenAI

Italy has banned the use of the advanced chatbot ChatGPT, created by US start-up OpenAI and backed by Microsoft, due to privacy concerns.

The Italian data protection authority will investigate OpenAI and has given the company 20 days to address its concerns or face a fine of up to €20m or 4% of annual revenues.

The regulator cited a data breach involving user conversations and payment information and claimed that the app did not comply with General Data Protection Regulation.

ChatGPT has also been blocked in China, Iran, North Korea and Russia. Microsoft recently added the chatbot to Bing and plans to embed a version in its Office apps.
