Train accident in Greece kills at least 32

Greek media describes the train crash as the most severe train accident ever witnessed in Greece.

At least 32 people lost their lives and 85 were injured in a train derailment between Athens and Thessaloniki, Greece on Tuesday night.

The collision occurred between a passenger train carrying 350 people and a freight train. Three carriages were derailed, one completely crushed and others emitting smoke and flames. The cause of the collision is yet to be determined.

150 firefighters and 40 ambulances were deployed, along with cranes and mechanical personnel, to assist with the rescue and recovery operation. Efforts to free those still trapped continue. Many injured receive treatment in two local hospitals, with military hospitals in Athens and Thessaloniki also on standby.

Greek media have described the accident as the worst train disaster in the country’s history. The collision caused shock and devastation for those involved, with one survivor recounting how he was stained with the blood of injured passengers.

An emergency government meeting was held, and both the Greek health minister and interior minister have visited the scene to oversee the response.

The collision has sparked national mourning, and the Greek prime minister has declared a three-day period of mourning in response. The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
